"None of this can happen without federal funding and I intend to fight for every penny of our tax dollars to come back home and be invested in projects here. These dollars can be used to retool factories, build schools, expand road projects, and put people back to work. We must have an advocate for Dayton in Congress; someone who will fight to bring dollars back into the district to put people back to work rather than to refuse to request our hard-earned tax dollars out of principal. I intend to fight for my home. Wright Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) is a crucial part of our economy here in Dayton and the Miami Valley. WPAFB is the largest single site employer in Ohio and I will fight to bring every dollar of federal funding to the base to expand research projects and grow the workforce. "While the original objectives of the Elementary and the Secondary Education Act, more commonly known as No Child Left Behind, were in good faith and meant to create a national education system where all students had access to high-quality public education, the end product became a weighted-down, overly complex piece of legislation that burdened local school systems with high administration costs and unfunded mandates. As Congress is beginning the process of reauthorizing of this legislation, it is necessary that we re-envision the federal government's role in education. We must reform important aspects of No Child Left behind so that the end result accomplishes its original goals without overburdening our education system and draining the system of all innovation and flexibility in the classroom...The American public school system needs to move to a value-added assessment model where it measures students, teachers, schools, districts and states not against others but rather against their own growth and improvement. It is necessary that our school accountability programs not only identify the failures of schools but also recognize progress and growth and reward individual successes of a district, its schools and their students. We must support our schools with national grants to strengthen staff through professional growth, lower class sizes and provide extended learning time... As we move forward in reforming and improving our education system from birth through college, it is necessary that we remember the impact of federal legislation on states, localities, schools, teachers and students. Unfunded mandates must be a thing of the past. Programs that improve our society and better educate our children are an investment that we must make at the federal, state and local levels. The cost of these programs is a necessary part of the process. I pledge as the next Congressman representing Ohio's Third Congressional District to not only support necessary educational programs with a vote but also with the funding necessary to achieve success. It is our responsibility as a people to take action and improve each school and each child's education throughout the country in a way that individually works for them. We must act quickly and effectively to stop the effects of climate change, preserve wild species and habitats, and create a clean and renewable future for our children. I have and will continue to fight for our environment and believe that the dangers currently facing our Earth are some of the most pressing issues we face...In order to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and to slow climate change we must change the way we produce energy in this country. With new innovations in technology we are able to reduce our air pollution by requiring newly-built coal plants to use the cleanest technology available. We must also require that all existing plants meet the same qualifications within ten years time. While new and existing plants must be addressed, so must the source of our energy. We are in a unique position in this country to harness many natural sources of energy that are renewable, clean, and cost effective. In order for our energy system and culture to change, we must set standards, guidelines and timelines of green energy production and efficiency standards and sources. Congress has already required vehicle manufacturers to produce more efficient vehicles and have set standards and timelines for energy and gasoline efficiency. I believe we need to take this one step further. It is crucial for our environment that we mandate 30 percent of our energy to come from renewable sources such as wind, solar or tidal power by the year 2040. This will force energy producers to bring their operations up to speed quickly and can create green jobs by investing in production of these renewable technologies." (votesmart.org)
